You may not have seen Matt
on a Saturday lately (although you can see him at the right time of any
weekday) but he is busy training and setting his sights on some
fundraising. I'm crazy enough to be running/walking/crawling 100km to fight poverty on Aug 29-31. Can you help by sponsoring me and my team?
Oxfam TRAILWALKER
is an endurance event where teams of four complete a 100km bush
trail through some of the most rugged terrain in NSW, from the
Hawkesbury (Brooklyn) to the Harbour (Mosman) in less than 48 hours.
We are hoping to complete our first attempt in around 20 hours by
travelling through the night.
Your donation to
my team will help Oxfam Australia achieve its vision of a fair world
in which people control their own lives, their basic rights are
achieved and the environment is sustained.
Our team name is
Griffon (for Griffith, where I live, and Picton where I found 3
other crazy men to join me on the quest).
Donations are tax
deductible. Please don't feel obliged but all thoughts or donations,
large or small will be much appreciated (and will help keep me
motivated when I'm exhausted, tired and cold and still a long way
from home!) Donations can be made online - follow the link below. Or
if you catch up with me in person you can pass them on and I'll
write a receipt. You can also have a look at our blog and around our
webpage and learn more of Oxfams work.
I'm planning for our youthgroup here in
Griffith to be up for 24hrs in our church hall as a distance support
crew. I'll keep them updated on my condition as the event
progresses if you would like to check in and see how things are
going.
Janelle and Tony have been travelling backwards and forwards with Paris to the Children's Hospital Westmead. The staff there have been terrific and that staff actively involved in fundraising for their own hospital and unit. Janelle has asked if I would pass on the email text from the hospital team in this year's City to Surf to raise $10,000. If you'd like to help, ring Janelle or Tony and offer your support.
For the past 2 years, I
have had the honour of working with a very dedicated group of
scientists and clinicians at the Institute for Neuromuscular
Research.
These researchers are
passionate about finding a cure for neuromuscular disorders in
children.
Each year in
Australia, 1 in 1000 children are born with inherited neuromuscular
disorders, such as muscular dystrophy.
These children are destined to a
life of difficulty, often shortened by
complications of their weak muscles.
I am writing to ask you
to sponsor our Team in this year's City2Surf.
We have 22 in the Team
including Professor Ouvrier (Head of the Institute) and other staff
of the INMR, two young children patients (in wheelchairs), their
family members, friends, my son Shai and myself. We intend to walk
or run the 14 km and are working together to raise $10,000.
The INMR scientists are
currently developing state-of-the-art technology - using tiny chips
called "microarrays" - that allows them to
simultaneously measure the activity of more than 20,000 different genes in a single sample of patient muscle. To help interpret the huge amounts of information generated by these experiments, they need to purchase a powerful commercial software package called Ingenuity Pathway Analysis, which provides tools for visualising and analysing complex data. The Ingenuity package would allow them to use the microarray results to build a detailed molecular understanding of how a single change in a DNA strand can have such terrible effects in a disease like muscular dystrophy - and potentially, how to halt or even reverse those effects.
A donation from you will
help us reach our goal - if you would like to donate, please click
on the link below.

(Tax-deductible donations made online to the Children's Hospital at Westmead will be directed to the INMR).
If you would like to join our Team as
a fundraiser, select "Join This Team" on the Hero Page and contact
me for the password.
Hero page password is "samarai".
On behalf of the INMR's
patients and staff, I thank you for your support.

1 in 1000 suffer from neuromuscular disorders
The Institute for
Neuromuscular Research is an internationally renowned institute
specialising in nerve and muscle disorders, which affect 1 in 1000.
Neuromuscular disorders, such as muscular dystrophy, are severe and
often progressive disorders that result in muscle weakness.
Most children lose the ability to walk and often develop respiratory
failure. Over 700 families from Australia
and overseas are treated at the Institute’s Clinic at The Children’s
Hospital at Westmead every year. Researchers at the Institute seek
to find effective therapies through pioneering clinical trials –
therapies that improve the quality of life of children suffering
from muscular dystrophy disorders. A donation will help continue the
search for a cure for this debilitating, and sometimes fatal,
disease.
For further
information or to make an offline donation, please contact Leanne
Mills, Neurogenetics Unit Manager, INMR on 61-2- 98451905 or
leannem@chw.edu.au
For those who
would like to join us in the City2Surf on Sunday, August 10th:
