Race 1 – Bacchus competition
Today’s race was the first of the series leading up
to the Easter Bacchus Fun Run which will this year be renamed in honour
of our new sponsor Leo Franco Motors Nissan and Holden; we might shorten
this in future to the Leo Franco MNH Bacchus.
In preparation for the aforementioned race the long course will
be run over a distance of 6.2 km for the first four weeks and will then
extend to 10km for the remainder of the series.
Conditions were warm on Saturday with the humidity
an uncomfortable 43%. Happily the heat doesn’t seem to bother some
runners – Jacob Quade ran a good time off a decent handicap for the long
course, coming in first ahead of Stewart Wood who positively sprinted
around. Anthony Trefilo took third placing with the fastest time and
John Dodd came in a very respectable fourth.
There were a few new faces in the top ten this week so the
handicapper might have some surprises in store for Race 2 of the
competition.
Maria Sergi wasn’t running with her usual form but
still summonsed enough energy to sprint past her husband near the finish
of the long course. Anthony
may have been regretting his decision to tackle the long course for the
first time as it finishes with a punishing climb that always seems to go
on a bit longer than expected.
A fair proportion of the field was bunched up on this very hill
at the end of the race with the slower runners on smaller handicaps
being overtaken by the faster runners coming from behind. If the
handicapping system is working well this is just what you would expect
towards the end of a run.
In the short course Arthur Hancock ran a very fast
time overtaking almost the entire field from a second to last starting
position. He finished in
first place with Melissa Budd and Edward Toole not far behind.
Quite a number of joggers have been busy training
for the club’s inaugural half marathon to be held at the end of the
month. One keen runner (?)
was even spotted driving the course!
The joggers meet every Saturday at the water tower
on the hill @ 5.30 pm daylight savings time.
