Inaugural Half Marathon – 8am start

It was with great excitement and anticipation that 19 runners fronted up to the MTN nine car park at 7.30 on Saturday morning.  Janet had set up a little table for registrations complete with ipod dock and music. The registration sheet was pre-printed with a list of possible entrants but it was interesting to see who did (and didn’t!) turn up on the day.  All participants received a T-shirt (thanks go to Bob Barker for the printing) and a race number to pin on their shirts.

Finally we were all assembled at the start line although there were still some runners whizzing off into the bushes for last minute toilet stops. Adam gave a bit of a spiel about the course, Miriam lined herself up at the start with two stop watches and we all set off about 8.11.

The course consisted of a 4km loop that finished back at the starting line near the MTN car park.  We then retraced our steps for a bit and then headed left (west) towards Wood Road for the next leg of the course.  This took us along Wyangan Avenue, and then up behind the houses on Wood Road until we reached the water tower at the top of the hill. At this point runners crossed the road, to the southern side of scenic hill and made their way to the top of the ridge.  Hermits cave marked 15 kilometres and it was fairly easy running from there down to the bottom of the hill along a narrow and winding track.  One final water stop and another road crossing saw the field heading back towards the finish line at MTN nine.

Every single competitor not only made the distance but finished under 2.30. This was the time limit set to discourage runners who might not be up to the longer distance.  Some competitors were way faster than that but as Rule No. 10 (Pine Belt Runners) states “all runners are equal, some are just faster than others.” Rule No. 24 also applies: “Races aren’t just for those who can run fast”. There were a couple of stumbles but no serious injuries and everyone made it to the finish line without incident.  The weather was kind with a light breeze keeping us cool most of the way.

Special thanks to Adam Johnson and Janet Mazzarolo for organising the event and to all those runners who were willing to give it a go.  This was the first but hopefully not the last long distance event the club has run; total distance was 21.3km.
