Griffith Joggers August 1

A contingent of the Griffith Joggers will face the annual City to Surf in Sydney next weekend, and the pace was extreme for their final hit out on the hill on Saturday.

There was adrenalin in the air on a highly competitive outing and pained expressions on the faces of the finishers as they crossed the line, and over half the field recorded competition best times.

Back in twenty fifth place John Dodd muttered that he had a shocker, but his time was still close to his best and it was the rest of the field that had exceeded itself.

Leading the field home was Hillston recruit Greg Burgess who has now got his membership organised, his body aligned, his mind on the track, and he is now ready to fire up the handicap rankings.

Close behind was Glenys Greenaway who was so fresh she was looking for recruits for an extra three kilometres warm down - without much response – and third went to Sadhana Tiwari who has been long absent from the podium but this week looked more comfortable and fitter, and has succeeded in getting a positive handicap again.

The bulk of the top ten places were taken by the midfielders Rita McIver, Jo Polkinghorne, Maria Sergi, Nicole Dehnert, Lena Sergi and Ben Chopping, and only Nicole Restagno from the fast end of the field managed to break in at eighth.

Restagno with 33.01 and Adam Johnson with 31.46 set the fastest times for the 7.7km course, and the sweeper this week was Kim Myott with her saga of missing the short course turnoff and completing the long course instead – except that she hadn't realised the long course was longer than usual, so she arrived well behind but in one piece.

In the short course, Gabrielle Wood has been knocking a minute off each week and a further thirty seconds this week got her the victory, ahead of the consistent Madeline Lyons who went a little bit quicker this week to claim second thanks to some friendly rivalry, and third was Timmy Dixon.

Tony Gullo opted for the short course to baptise young Joe Gullo as a hill jogger and they finished midfield, and not far back was Tracey Dall Est who managed a reasonable placing despite starting an extra five minutes late.

Attendance is expected to be down next with runners travelling to Sydney so it is a great chance for a hard to get top ten place for the remainder, and the pointscore could change dramatically.

So far 25 junior runners have claimed the Franks Service Centre sponsored caps for completing the marathon 42.2km distance this year, and 56 seniors have claimed the South Pacific Seeds sponsored caps for 100km, and there are still more on offer with around ten weeks remaining in the season, and plenty of runners close enough to claim one – check out the website your kilometres.

There is plenty happening in coming weeks, with the City to Surf, two more runs in this competition, then the Lakesview Classic, and as well the new electronic tag timer will be making a showing.

The Joggers meet at the green water towers on Saturday at 4:30pm with your choice of long or short runs on the quiet tracks of Scenic Hill.
