Joggers – Race Two Winter Competition 17/04/10
Runners were more familiar with the course this
week for the Feral Joggers Race Two of the 2010 Winter Competition and
some displayed times that were significantly lower than previous weeks.
Elio Minato was a clear 20 seconds ahead of Greg Burgess and Paul Muir.
For Minato it was his first win and came as a surprise – he had thought
that as no-one had caught him he must have gone the wrong way.
Knowing the way is certainly a big part of the
tactics needed to perform well on the hill. This Winter Course takes
runners along the ridge of Scenic Hill from the highest point to the
lowest and then takes them back up the long (1.8km) Dom’s Dilemma track.
This track is the final part of both the long and short courses.
Dom’s Dilemma takes its toll on inexperienced and
new runners until they realise that the hill rises in three stages. Each
stage is different and different approaches are needed to keep the
runner moving forward and keeping the rest of the field behind.
In the bottom third of the climb, the track is
narrow and the bushes grow closer encouraging runners to slow a little
to annoy those behind, but not enough that they lose momentum on the
levelling out. With a strategic spurt, the front runner can remain in
the lead after forcing those following into a queue.
But the levelling out is short lived and the track
widens and again inclines. Those in the queue behind will be able to
pass but remain in view. A front runner can tell who is approaching from
behind by the sounds. Campbell’s keys are easily heard crashing about in
his pocket, and John Dodd breathes like a best of burden. Breathing is
heavy and sustained in all runners, sucking in the air as fast as their
mouths can fill with it.
The third and final stage of the climb is the
steepest, at first, and winds through the bush. Runners ahead will
disappear into the undergrowth. A head down, small steps style is called
for. Most importantly, it is vital not to panic or ‘overcook’ on this
section. Runners need to assess the amount of fuel in the tank and make
appropriate adjustments to performance. For some, walking is never
allowed.
And finally, the track levels off again and widens.
Runners ahead are still in view and catchable as you pass the once
living cypress tree that marks Ohappy Point and the pinnacle of Dom’s
Dilemma. Again an assessment of the fuel levels is necessary before the
final surge for home taking a conservative approach on the steep section
and staying high around the tree in the middle of the track.
For short course runners, Dom’s Dilemma is about
half of their course distance. Conquering it means a step to running
maturity. And maturity is what
Andrew Bastianon showed for first place in the short course ahead of a
returning Steven Heffer and Mickayla Graham two seasoned and speedy
young athletes.
Full details of this week’s results, and of the
Bacchus are available at www.griffithferals.org.au.
The joggers meet at the green water tower every
Saturday at 4.30 for short and long courses. All are welcome.
