Race Report A chunk of the start list of the
Griffith Joggers shot themselves in the foot and made it easier for the
remainder of the field to get the honours in race five of the Winter
competition on Scenic Hill on Saturday.
Elio Minato was the first to founder as he took
himself and two colleagues on a track too far, which was an unfortunate
way for Elizabeth Heffer to celebrate her promotion from the zero
handicap, but at least they registered times.
Worse was to come as another ten runners from the
early starters took a track too short and were relegated to the rear of
the field without times and recorded the minimum participation points.
This was a gift waiting to be taken for the
navigationally gifted runners further back in the field and it was the
leaner and hungrier Ian Forrest that snapped up first place.
Forrest had twenty seconds to spare and then the
top ten were all in in barely more than another thirty seconds, with the
up and down Liam Burgess firing this week at second and Adam Johnson
putting in his best of the competition at third and the fastest time of
the day with 25:14 for the six kilometres.
Forrest towed along Wendy Minato, Mark Harris and Gerald Yuen who all finished with
high placings, and first timer Frank Dyrssen in this group also looked
the goods early but his second half sagged a little.
Tracey Josling was out of the ten despite her
fastest time of the day with 27:48.
First place has put Forrest up to equal leader of
the pointscore with Maree Licastro with five of the nine races gone and
this is where the hard work starts for the wannabees, to aim for
placings and no crashes for the rest of the series.
As usual, there was plenty of variety in the short
course with both old and young, walkers and runners, fast and slow, and
through it all Andrew Bastianon lead the field home with thirty seconds
to spare but it was tight for the remaining honours.
It is no longer any surprise to see Molly Burgess
highly placed, second this week with the women's fastest time of 17:59
for the 3.3km, and Rod Bortolin leading the oldies at third and just a
few seconds back.
Another few seconds and Brock Twigg finished well
placed in his first run, with dad Phil a few steps behind, and at
twelfth Anthony Trefilo had the fastest time of 14:23 in a now rare
outing on the short course.
Plenty of juniors are taking the short course at
present as preparation for school cross country races, but it is not the
fitness that is the main objective as most of them are fit enough from
other sports, but the big benefit is the experience.
Beginners tend to be either fast forward or pause
and it takes time to build confidence, mental stamina and a steady pace
when out there alone on the track, and the younger ones benefit from
adult support.
The Joggers run from the green water tower each
Saturday at 4:30pm with a current choice of 3km or 6km on the tracks and
trails of the hill, and this week is a good chance to get a placing with
quite a few out of town for major runs in Sydney and the Blue Mountains.
