2007 Hotfoot Competition - Race 1
Saturday, 10 November 2007
Race one of the Joggers new year was expected to be a sedate affair, the warmer weather made that more likely, and the mood was overly calm at the start, but somewhere out on the course the dice was thrown and some sizzling times were recorded at the line.
Tarek Heiland added another to his string of high quality runs, starting last off the grid and setting the fastest time of the day with 22:48 for the 6.7 kilometres, and managed to pass the entire field except for one.
Last week it was Karen Strachan and this week Louise Strachan was the fly in his ointment who claimed the win, the only runner in the front half of the field to get any honours at the line.
The Strachans are new to the hill and have quickly found their feet, while Heiland seems to have enjoyed collecting his trophy at the annual dinner and is looking for another.
He credits his fitness to the effort required to complete the recent club event, the Virtual Triathlon, and has resolved not to let it lapse.
David Huxley at third may also be looking for another trophy to match the one he was awarded, while sometime course marker Adam Johnson at fourth is still rueing his "years worst navigation" award but is setting himself up to try again.
Also running well to make the top ten were Ben Lloyd, Tracey Josling, David Ottrey who is off this weekend to the Shepparton Half Ironman Triathlon, Teresa Burgess, Tony Del Gigante and David Alpen, several of whom showed that late home from the awards night doesn't impede a good run the next day.
Chris Gale featured way back but got a cheer on his last run with the Joggers, as did Stewart Wood who swept up the field on his first time back from the repair shop.
The short run saw Liam Burgess with a great start to his new year taking a clear win, too quick even for the timekeeper to get up to the finish line in time.
Youngster Emma Slattery and "oldie" Joe Restagno have both been on the up and up with their running and took second and third, barely ahead of the fast finishing Anthony Trefilo who set the fastest time of the day with 11:43 for the 3.3km.
The runners were coming in a line just seconds apart with Sandra Altin, Mark Gatto, Jon Condon, Rani Aitken, Kim Myott and Donovan Foscarini all close but not close enough.
The current competition runs for seven weeks, finishing just in time for Christmas pudding, with a choice of long or short course over the tracks of Scenic Hill.
With the warmer weather coming it becomes more important than ever for runners to ensure they have had sufficient water in the day leading up to the run, and to take it easier out on the course. Better to ease off and survive to run another day.
