2010 Winter Competition - Race 7
Saturday, 22 May 2010
There were few exceptions to the general rules at the Griffith Joggers run on Scenic Hill on Saturday, and rule number one was cooler conditions produce faster times, as more than a dozen runners recorded competition best times.
Last week's hero Elio Minato put in good one, running another twenty seconds faster but having to settle for only ninth place this week, and likewise, Maree Licastro, Keith McDonald, Jayson Heffer, David Slattery, Rita McIver and Brian Bellicanta all recorded 'best times' but were unable to break into the top ten.
Top honours went to Fletcher Josling and Alex Forrest who have both been away from the hill doing alternate training and came back to blitz the rest of the Joggers.
Starting together, the two were never far apart around the course, although Josling took an early lead and held it throughout, taking the reward denied a few weeks ago when he lost the track mid race.
Well back in third and just ahead of the mad rush to the line was Arun Tiwari who has benefitted from the training for, and recovery after, his Canberra Half Marathon three weeks ago, and that is rule number two, that everyone needs rest and recovery.
Further back in the field this week were a few sore and tired bodies after big events last week, as Nicole Dehnert, Janet Mazzarolo, Wendy Minato, Gerald Yuen and Stewart Wood were still feeling the effects of the Sydney Morning Herald Half Marathon, and Teresa Burgess had lead legs after her thousands of steps around the Katoomba area, but the exception was Tracey Josling who felt recovered enough to slip into tenth place with the fastest time of the competition - 27:01 for the six kilometres.
Ian Forrest arrived at the start line with his twinged hammy well taped, ran twenty seconds faster, and took a very significant seventh place, just enough to jump back to the top of the competition table with the smallest possible lead over Maree Licastro.
The pair have been sharing and swapping the lead over recent weeks and with two weeks to go in the series, the rest of the field is out of it, one of them will take the trophy, and both are equally determined.
Given the pleasant conditions the times in the short course were slower than expected but Anne Bortolin jumped at the chance to be the odd one out, setting a competition best time and claiming the win, the first of her feral career.
Jackson Austin was second and the first junior, and Trent Rosato was close behind for third, and at fourth and fifth Molly Burgess and Ben Potroz set the fastest times of the day with 18:46 and 14:34 for the hilly 3.3km course.
Youngsters Taine Moraschi and Ryan Minato put in good performances in their debut runs.
Plenty of juniors are taking the short course but it is not the fitness that is the main objective as most of them are fit enough from other sports, but the big benefit is the experience.
Beginners tend to be either fast forward or pause and it takes time to build confidence, mental stamina and a steady pace when out there alone on the track, and the younger ones benefit from adult support.
The Joggers run from the green water tower each Saturday at 4:30pm with a current choice of 3km or 6km on the tracks and trails of the hill.
