2010 Winter Competition - Race 8

Saturday, 29 May 2010

With both temperatures and rain falling, the 2010 Winter Competition is hotting up for the Griffith Joggers.

Wet weather meant a return to the bike track for Race Eight of the competition which favours the front starters who don’t have to concentrate on their feet as much and can let the joy of running take over. It was a shame that it didn’t actually rain while out on the course. There is nothing nicer than running in the rain once you are warm.

Starting fast can lead to problems later for the inexperienced runners who don’t realise until too late that the return journey is uphill as Gary Workman discovered. Despite a little walking while he thought no-one was looking, Workman still took line honours ahead of a closing pack. Jason Rosenow ran second, in form from not playing an earlier football game, ahead of Keith McDonald and Sheila Marcus.

All eyes were focused on the finishing places of the two pointscore leaders who are tussling for ultimate glory and a magnificent trophy. Ian Forrest started the day with a 5 point lead. He consolidated that with his 6th place and earn 25 points more than Maree Licastro in 10th. Forrest had the advantage of starting 30 seconds behind Licastro which enabled him to pace himself with her and determine the most strategic time to overtake.

Both runners deserve to win. Forrest has shown what losing several kilograms can do to his overall health and fitness and Licastro has learned what competition and drive are all about.

The short course numbers were, understandably, depleted due to the weather, but again the conditions were conducive to fast times and good efforts. Isabelle Wood really hoofed it to get back in first place and had her fastest time for months. Perhaps she was just hoping to get back into the warm car? Second and third places were a Burgess family showdown with Molly narrowly edging out Amy for the higher podium position.
